The lost soul
#WritcoStoryChallenge
The footsteps following me sounded closer. I ran through the empty corridors of the hospital, my heart pounding with terror.
I turned a corner and stopped short. I had reached a dead end. With my eyes opened wide, sweat pouring, I couldn't blink. I need to get out of here. There, at the end of the hall was a shadow. I couldn't place its identity. Looking around I saw a rusted iron lying close to the wall. This is an opportunity to fight my way out of here. I'm not going down. I summoned up the courage to do so. wrapping my fingers tight to the iron. I muttered words of prayer. Then right in front of me was a man looking at me sternly. Without much thought, I rushed towards him with all the strength I had. I hit him on the chin as hard as I could, my eyes never left the door.. I ran so fast and hard past him as he fell. With tears in my eyes, my only thought was to get home. I thought about my baby, Pearl. I could see her, stretching her hands towards me with a bright smile on her face. I'm coming home darling, Mama loves you. I didn't look back.. I found my way out of that dark and lonely corridor. I dashed into the streets. How did I get here? Where is my car?
The last thing I remember was stepping out of the house to take a look at the beautiful sunset after having a wonderful time with dad and pearl.
I could still remember how beautiful the sun looked.
The beauty in the sky.
The fresh smell of the flowers in my garden.
This isn't right. I need to get home.
I ran through the dark and lonely street. It was cold, dogs were barking, I saw the homeless, sleeping in the streets. Then in a distance, a car's headlight came on. I stood still, I felt my joints weaken, hot tears rolled down from my eyes. The car started driving towards me, slowly then its speed increased. My car was no where to be found. All I could do was run. I did, as fast as I could but soon the car got close. I fell to the ground, moving back with my hands. Two men came down from the car, they were talking to me but I couldn't hear then. I thought I was going the die, my heart raced so fast. Then one came closer.
Who are you?
What's your name?
Why are you out by this time?
I could hear them now. I looked closely. They were cops. They pulled me up and we walked back to their car. All the while, I was shuddering.
As we began to drive off, I looked back and saw the man that followed me. I cried the more. I was free. I could see my baby again. Dad would have been so worried. I just wanted to go back home.
Getting home was a thing of joy. Dad cried upon seeing me. I looked dirty. I was told I had gone missing for two days. That night, I laid in pearl's room. I had missed her so much. I couldn't sleep. I thought about everything that happened that night. It was horrible. I didn't know I had sustained injuries. They didn't matter that much. I was happy I got home.
During the day, dad was listening to the news. It was announced that a man was caught at midnight by the cops while trying to sneak into the same abandoned hospital I escaped from with an unconscious lady.
He was then arrested while the lady was taken to a hospital for treatment.
I was filled with joy. Thanking God for what He did.
My escape from that place can't be comprehended.
As time went by, I heard stories of how women went missing for days and were later found dead or were never found. This had been happening for years before I moved to that side of the country. He was sentenced to death. No one came for him. No one cried for him. He had no family. His soul was lost.
