The Running Queen
He found her again. She was barely able to stop a sigh of irritation from escaping her mouth. Of course, she knew it'd eventually come to this, but she hoped it would take longer this time around. She was finally figuring out what she liked and what she wanted in life. In life without somebody constantly watching her every step.
Sometimes it was difficult to tell what ice cream flavor she liked. She was usually more concerned with keeping her guard up than with things as mundane as her preferences. For a regular person, it might seem odd but those things proved to have a bigger significance in her line of work. So, not being capable of specifying them, made her everyday struggle this much harder.
How was she supposed to appear reliable, while not knowing basic things about herself? Well, she's never had that sort of problems before she left home. But she wouldn't go back there if the king himself begged her on his knees. If she only could, she would smash his precious crown with a hammer as big as his head.
She had to do something. Judging by the state of the rubble all around, she could tell he went on to search for her. He must've deducted she left not too long ago, or... Has he been watching her? Gotten too caught up in his destroying then, to care about where she was going? Why in the world did he let her disappear off his radar? He couldn't have guessed she would be back this soon, of course, but not sending anyone after her wasn't his usual drill. Something seemed wrong.
She slowly got down on her knees. The remainings of walls around were high enough for her to hide. She needed a plan, and she needed one fast. She couldn't call Carly, didn't want to put her life in danger. Besides, they all would ultimately forget her, so maybe that was for the best.
- Yo, Rye! What the heck happened here?
Great. Matt had to come around at this very moment. Did she not tell him to wait outside of the store? Goodness Gracious.
- Matt, go back to the store. Now! - she muttered.
She had no idea where he was, and that made it way more hazardous than anytime before. Sure, it was still rather dangerous when she could see him causing damage, but she at least had an option to flee in the right direction. Or fight back. And now, not only was she clueless, but she also had a human being by her side. A human being sentenced to death if he gets caught with her.
- No, seriously. What went on? We were gone for five minutes, how did this...?
He approached her, before she even turned around to yell at him. He grabbed her by the arms and pulled her up.
- Matt! - she hissed. Well, almost. Half of the word went all the way back to her lungs and she choked on it.
- Well, hello, hello.
What the actual...? Where's Matt? She could've sworn she heard his voice just that second! How was he...?
- Clyron?
She instinctively reached for her gun just to realize she's left it at Carly's.
- So, now you're walking around with the nerdy guy, huh? The king wouldn't like this. - He crossed his arms, looking at her with some sort of disgust in his eyes.
- As if it was his business. - She smiled ironically. - You could really stop burning my houses down already, it's become boring.
- Boring? - He raised his eyebrow. - You used to love a good show back in the day, and I put it out. I don't see a problem here. Let's go. They're waiting for you home, woman.
- I'm not a woman. Don't call me that.
She felt a weird annoyance at that word coming out of his lips. They were as blue as she remembered them. Even though she hasn't seen them in a while. Lately, he's taken a liking in playing different characters. Once he was a policeman, another time a clumsy bank clerk. She couldn't remember the last time she's seen him.
- You act like their women, you dress like their women, and you're trying to mate with their men instead of fulfilling your duties. Tell me how should I call you.
She knew it was bad. She had no armor on her, they were in a secluded area of town, and he was standing in front of her in his true form. Conclusion? He knew nobody was going to stop him. He was sure of himself. She decided not to play dumb, that wouldn't give her anything but a headache.
- Because I'm not willing to marry an idiot who can't make me do that, so he ordered his solider to follow me around and burn my houses down? - She covered half of her face with her left palm. She was already tired of having that conversation with him. He knew why she ran away and it was simply cruel of him to bring that up, as if he had no idea.
- We're not going to talk like this.
He reached out and swiped his fingers behind her ear to take her cover off. She felt a shiver walking up and down her spine, seeing her lavender hair out again.
- Find the king another fiancee and everyone will be fine! Why can't you just leave me at peace?
She felt tears welling up in her eyes against her will. - You said you loved me. Why do you keep chasing me?
