It was pitch dark on a moonless night so I took a shortcut through the village as it was nearing midnight. There was nobody around and was very quiet. I couldn’t see clearly where I was going. To make things worse, I was blinded by the high beams of the oncoming car. When I recovered, I saw a silhouette right in front of me. I swerved to avoid it. I stepped on my brakes and it screeched to a halt when my car hit a tree.
Everything turned black and my head was throbbing. I looked up, blood dripping down my head. I decided to continue my journey home. I drove slowly as there seemed to be a crowd now. People were gathering and they seemed absorbed and oblivious. I honked at them but was ignored. I was so furious but at the same time afraid.
I pulled my handbrake and got out of my car. I waved my hand to attract their attention. But nobody seemed to care. I was invisible to them. They were busy crowding around something. Then I heard the ambulance and police sirens. I, too was curious and headed over. I saw them pulling out a lifeless body and putting it into the ambulance. As the door was about to close, I managed to catch a glimpse.
I was shocked and could not believe what I saw. The body seemed to look like me. I tapped on the shoulder of a man next to me to ask what had happened. But he did not respond at all. I screamed in frustration but nothing happened. I stole a glance at the side mirror of the ambulance. But there was no image of me at all. Where was I? Who was that in the ambulance? What was going on? Was I DEAD? ⚰️
