The Road to Grace part 18
Shawn started to believe this wasn't exactly a trick when he saw Kelsey dressed in faded jeans and a plain pink t-shirt.
He remembered how dressed up she got for church so maybe she was being truthful.
"Are you feeling alright?" Kelsey asked as she turned into the church parking lot.
"Yes, I'm fine."
"Sorry, you've just been really quiet."
"It's early. Look, the sun's barely up. I only got a half cup of coffee."
"I didn't tell you to pour it out in the sink."
"Like I'm going to bring an open cup of coffee in your spotless car."
Kelsey groaned, "You're so frustrating. They'll have coffee inside."
"In the church? That's allowed?"
"I'm starting to think you do have brain damage. I just told you last night we would be having breakfast before we got started."
"I've had brain damage. It's called being Jay's son."
"So funny. Such a comedian," Kelsey rolled her eyes as she turned the car off.
"My whole life has been a joke so..."
"Come on. Maybe some coffee will shut your nonsense up."
He grinned and opened his door, following Kelsey down a short set of stairs that led into a long looking cafeteria.
White tables with fold out chairs occupied nearly the whole room, with just enough space to walk around.
There was already around twenty people present, some a little more dressed up than others.
The majority looked atleast a decade or two older than him.
He followed Kelsey closely and dared not to look anyone else in the eye.
He remembered her promise of leaving if he got uncomfortable, but as she was pouring coffee for the both of them a middle aged black haired woman called out her name and wrapped her arms around Kelsey's neck.
"So glad you made it sweet girl! We missed you!"
"I missed you guys too. It's been a crazy week."
"Pastor told me you called him for prayers. Is everything alright? Did your trip to Virginia go okay?"
Kelsey tried to avoid looking too directly at Shawn as she handed his cup of coffee to him.
"Yeah...a friend of mine was in the hospital. They're doing good now."
"Thank God! Well I'll let you get you something to eat. Talk to you later."
"You told your pastor... really."
"Not in a lot of detail... I was really worried about you... don't look at me like that..."
Grabbing some donuts and heading to one of the tables near the far left of the room, Shawn shook his head not wanting to know how that conversation went.
"Are you mad at me?"
"No...a warning would've been nice though."
"It was a personal call. And if you listened all he obviously told others is that I requested prayers."
"What's your name brother?"
Shawn nearly jumped out of his chair as he heard a deep voice nearby by then noticed it thankfully wasn't meant for him.
A man maybe pushing on thirty had greeted another man almost five seats away.
"I wouldn't spread your personal business then ask you to come along...you don't believe me."
"Yeah, I believe you. Last time we went to church together just didn't end well."
"That's because my dad's a jerk."
"Then I kidnapped you, remember?"
"Shut up!"
"Maybe that was God's way of saying we should stay apart."
"That's not funny."
Shawn shrugged as he looked to the two men chatting; the one...
