OH MY GOD!
Alagarathanam Natarajan or the Matkha Man as he is popularly called is an 69 year old man who has returned from London after defeating cancer where 32 years ago he ran a souvenir shop in Oxford street and came to live in India and started a revolution in in human kindness as he calls it by providing drinking water to the citizens of Delhi as he realised that it being a basic necessity was not being accessible to the people.
So,this starting as a good deed became the leading story in many of the newspapers of India.A person with limited resources cannot afford to buy a mineral waterbottle which costs more than 20 rupees. This inspirational man wakes up at about 5 a.m every morning and collects 20 litres of water everyday by 8 a.m and serves water to the needy Delhites. He drives a van which can fill about 70 matkas so that the poor donot go thirsty.
This story began in the summer of 2014.He is currently on a mission to ensure that nobody in South Delhi neighborhood goes thirsty.Water is life.We can live without food but not water. The thousands of people like the street vendors, sweepers, rickshaw pullers, shopkeepers, disabled, orphan children, working women, students, flower sellers, rice millers, farmers, customers, middleclass and even beggars get free drinking water.
This man was born in Bangalore and is on the OMG list.He also serves langar to the homeless in Chandni Chowk and carries out creamation of the destitutes. He also distributes 40kg of fruits to the labourers daily. He is called ALAG by his loved ones.
He always wanted to do something for his country and has made this dream a reality. And thd best part is that he is not alone in this venture and is helped by his Mother-in-law and wife.
He says that water is only a platform to help people. Not many in India get drinking water and in the current scenario everybody is being exploited. The world is too much with us and to have such bearings one needs to have faith and remain interconnected with the people and community around them.He is deeply inspired by the President of Uruguay Jose Mujica who was elected in 2010.He believes that everybody has to play well their part in the society.
He urges people to place matkas outside their homes. His number is placed on every matka stand and uses about 2000 litres of water and whenever he gets a call fills the water tank on his own. There are about 70 pots which are kept at different places around Delhi.
He is not backed by any NGO nor is he a Government of India employee. He does this on an inspiration to do something for his countrymen and now has become a real life hero.
