Lost Childhood 10
Lieutenant Sanchez had assigned one of his teams to a quiet neighborhood where there appeared to be some unusual activity that had been reported a few weeks ago at a house four doors down from where the Mitchells lived. There had been a van seen unloading some boxes by a few men in uniforms. Nothing too suspicious accept the house appeared to be vacant, only there was no for rent or for sale posted in the yard. The team he assigned to this part of the case could never seem to arrive in the neighborhood at the same time as the suspected van.

The men in the van didn’t seem to have any type of schedule. No matter what time the surveillance van arrived they could never be there at the same time as the other van. They also didn’t have enough hard evidence that would warrant requesting a twenty-four hour surveillance team be put in place; it was still just too early in the investigation. They would have to come up with another approach; they needed someone who could tip them off when the van showed up. This would keep them from wasting their man-hours on sitting around keeping surveillance on absolutely nothing.

Alex had found out from Jose that Sara worked at one of the houses a few doors down from the house where the van of interest usually parked. During one of his visits with Jose, he decided to ask Sara out for lunch. She could be of some help pinpointing some of the van’s visits. He would give her his number (then he would have hers) and whenever the van showed up she could call him. He would then contact the surveillance van (problem solved). He would also have the opportunity of getting to know Sara a little better.

She was kind of excited about getting involved in police work. She was just as excited that Alex had asked her out even though it appeared to be a business meeting. She had not heard from Jorge in over a month; this was unusual considering he would call her every two weeks, no longer than three weeks at the most. This new assignment would keep her from getting lonely and missing Jorge at least. It would also give her a chance to get to know Alex. It would answer the question about all her interest about him, q
so she could get that out of her mind.

She didn’t quite know why, but she did find herself just a little disappointed that the lunch - business meeting was not an actual lunch date. Then one morning her phone ranged while she was taking Emily to school, it was Alex! As she was pulling away from the house, she noticed that the van had arrived at the house four doors down. Perfect timing she thought as she informed Alex of the news. He told her he would call her back and hung up; she was a little offended he didn’t say bye or thank you. Why it bothered her, she didn’t know; it just did. She continued taking Emily to school and as soon as she had dropped her off, her phone ranged again.

“So sorry about that, good morning and how are you today?” Alex said immediately. A smile came across her face as she answered and returned the same greeting without the apology. This time he appeared to be more cordial, soon they were talking as if they were longtime friends. He wanted to meet with her for lunch the next day. He wanted to give her a work phone; he told her then he wouldn’t have to take up much of her time. He instructed her to ring twice and then to hang up; that would be his sign that the van had shown up to the house. The only thing was that she didn’t mind calling and talking with Alex.
