The picture in the frame held a lot of memories. Some good, some sad. Her tired eyes roamed over it one last time before she tossed it in the fire. It was time to start afresh. With him gone she had no choice.
It was a rough relationship with Robert, whom she met as a child when he was eighteen. They married when she turned eighteen herself. It was what the family wanted. Ala went with it, only to learn that she walked into a controlling relationship with Robert. Robert had abused the fact that Ala was from Xenta, a realm Robert's family channeled through the occult. Ala was a princess and being married off like this was common.
Ala had the scars from being beaten by Robert from their home in Utopia, Ontario. She was silent for she never thought she could get help: woman in Xenta were property of men that were transfered from father to husband.
The shiny dresses of the white realm of Xenta were replaced by satins and silks of Earth, and Ala was introduced to the technology of North America. She saw televisions, and gaming consoles, and in public with Robert she saw lit bars and fireworks. There were computers and internet.
Robert's death was untimely. He had a heart attack at age forty and dropped dead. This was the best thing to happen to Ala as she learned from the lawyers that she inherited everything.
She knew that she was free in North America, and she didn't want to return to Xenta as a widow. So as she tossed the wedding photo into the fire she made, burning everything that reminded her of Robert, sans the house she was selling. She love him as much as she hated him, and she loved that he brought her to Utopia.
She now could start anew. The sky was the limit.
