The last bullet left the muzzle of his rifle with a deafening bang. It took with it all his hopes of survival.
He reached for the sharp knife held at his boot strap. He wasn't going out without a fight!
And then, just like that, he lost consciousness, hit by a power wave.
He awoke in torment, kicking all his limbs in panic as a nurse was occupied dressing one of his wounds.
- Hey! - she yelled with a strikingly familiar pitch in her cry. - Calm the heck down! - She pressed his chest against the bed, then slapped him. - Calm down - she repeated steadily, apparently seeing he was getting there.
- How...? - he mumbled in a hoarse voice.
She sighed.
- Somebody had to remain sensible under the circumstances, don't you think? - She continued on to wrapping his arm with a bandage.
- But...? - he inquired. - How am I alive?
She looked him dead in the eye, then ruffled his hair.
- I did what I had to - she said.
- You... what?
He was ready to jump out of the bed if she said what he thought she was about to say.
- I sold it.
But it got even worse.
- You sold the house?! - he shrieked.
- Calm down.
- How can you be telling me to calm down?! Do you realize what we've lost?!
- Would you rather die in that power field?! - She threw her hands in the air. He noticed tears welling up in her eyes. - I don't care about a stupid house they want to prosecute you over!
The tears fell down both her cheeks, making small scratches on her face shine in the sunlight.
Then he came to understanding she didn't reserve herself to selling the house only. She fought, too.
- What came over you?! - He stood up, completely ignoring her frantic movements, as she tried to catch him before he falls.
He didn't fall. He stood as strongly as he had never had in his life before. - Have you lost your mind?!
- I gave them what they wanted so they let us go! I don't care about this country anymore, do you hear me?! If they don't want change, we're not able to enforce it on them! We're not! How many more have to die so you finally see?! - She began crying hysterically at this point, and seconds later collapsed on the floor. - I want to start over! Somewhere safe! I don't want to fight for my life forever, knowing they're going to lie to us anyway! - she sobbed.
He knelt next to her and pulled her up into his arms. He stroked her head, and held his hand there for a while, then pressed a kiss against it.
- I hate this, too. But we can't get out of here, unless we have wings.
- We can - she blurted out.
She reached for something in her coat's pocket, and pulled out a small, emerald key.
- How did you get it?!
He couldn't believe his eyes. Were they saved? Really?
- One of the salesmen dropped it. And didn't bother to take it back.
