The Past We Left Behind - Chapter 4
Ethan stood beside her, his hands in his pockets. As they walked, Ethan occasionally glanced at Abigail. His gaze was drawn to her smile, the way her hair swayed in the wind and the sparkle in her eyes under the moonlight. There was something enchanting about her, though he couldn't quite make out what it was. Every time she noticed him looking, Abigail would instinctively smile shyly, which would make Ethan uncomfortable and he would start to smile too. Of course, then he would turn away again, so that Abigail wouldn't see.
“Well, stranger, you still haven't told me your name. What can I call you?” Abigail asked him as they got closer and closer to her home. Ethan's heart skipped a beat as Abigail turned to him. He cleared his throat and took a deep breath before answering, "Oh, sorry. My name is Ethan."
“Ethan. I like that name. It suits you." Abigail answered him with a smile and Ethan became uncomfortable again. His face turned red and he couldn't help but have that goofy, self-conscious smile that always made him feel like a fool. He wished he could wipe it off his face and act normal, but his body refused to listen. Before he could turn to the right again to hide it, Abigail spoke, "Here we are."
Ethan looked up and saw three buildings in front of him.
"This first one is mine." Abigail pointed to the first building on the left, then stepped towards it. Ethan followed right after. When they stepped through the front door, they entered the ground floor which had dull gray walls and a floor that was painted a shade darker. The door at the end of the room led to the basement, while on the left a staircase with a considerable number of steps stretched up to the next floor. Ethan couldn't help but snort in displeasure as he looked at the stairs.
"Please, just don't tell me you live on the top floor. How many floors are there anyway?" He asked, his voice revealing his reluctance. Abigail grinned at him, amused by his reaction. "What, you don't like exercise? My apartment is on the fourth floor."
Ethan's heart sank at the mention of the fourth floor. He wasn't in the best shape and he was also tired, so the thought of climbing all those stairs made him anxious. Still, he followed Abigail up the stairs, trying to keep up with her pace. His legs ached from walking all afternoon and he couldn't help but lean on the handrail every few steps. Abigail, on the other hand, seemed to climb the stairs with ease, as if it were the easiest thing in the world. Ethan couldn't help but wonder if she noticed how hard it was for him to keep up with her. Not wanting to appear weak or out of shape in front of her, he used his last atoms of strength to chase after her. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, they reached the fourth floor. Abigail took the key out of her pocket and turned to the first door on the left.
"You see it wasn't so bad." She said, addressing Ethan as she unlocked the door.
"Not at all." Ethan leaned against the wall and replied ironically, catching his breath.
