THE STORY OF BUDDHA.
Buddha was born beneath a sal tree in Lumbini in present day Nepal.He was born to the King of Sakya clan whose capital is Kapilavastu to Queen Mayadevi and King Suddhodana.The real name of Gautam Buddha is Siddharta.According to the prophecy he would either become an Universal Monarch or a saint and give up his life.So he was kept in great pomp and glory and kept away from poverty and suffering.But soon after marriage he had a change of mind and left the Kingdom premises to live the life if an ascetic.Thd Title Buddha refers to an enlightened being.His name Siddharta means "he who achieves his aim".
There are four incidents mentioned in the Buddha Poornima which chanfed his life forever and they are listed as the Four Nobel truths.An Old man.A Diseased man.A Dead man.An Ascetic.The four truths are the following-----1.The World is full of sorrow.2.Desire is the root cause for all sorrow.3.Sorrow can be conquered by conquering desire.4.Desire can be conquered by following the Eight-Fold-Path.The Eight-Fold-Path in Buddhism are listed below.
1)Right Understanding.2)Right Resolve.3)Right Speech.4)Right Action.5)Right Living.6)Right Efforts.7)Right Thought.8)Right Self-Concentration.
The three Ratnas of Buddhism are:
Buddha--the highest spiritual potential is everyone.Dhamma---the teachungs of Buddha.Sangha---order of monks who follow Buddhism.
Buddha is believed to have received enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree situated in Gaya.Tripitakas or the three baskets is the first book of Buddhism.Buddhism aroused in northeastern India between the late 6th century a period of great social change and intense religious activity.Buddhism appealed to many people of the lower castes.Buddhism was introduced in China during the Han dynasty.The Buddha didnot believe in the existence of the Supreme Being or the souls of men and never claimed divinity.Hys teachings were solely based on experiences and a human would find his own path to Nirvana.Buddhism spread mainly due to King Asoka.The three main types of Buddhism are the Mahayana,Theravada and the Vajrayana.
The basic beliefs of Buddhism are the following.
The first truth is the Dukkha or suffering.The second is the Samudaya and the third is the Nirodha and how an individual overcomes sufferings.
The Three Universal Truths followed by Buddhists are 1)Everything in life is impermanent.2)Earthly possessions donot make us happy.3)There is no Eternal soul.
The Five Precepts the Buddhists follow are:
Donot harm or kill living things.Donot take things unless freely given.Donot tell lies.Donot drink alcohol.
Thus,the ultimate goal of Buddhism is to attain Nirvana.
There is a difference of opinion on the birth and death of Buddha amongst the scholars.Buddha is undoubtedly one of the main influential figures in World History.He died of Food Poisoning.His body was cremated and relics placed in monuments or stupas.
