Red Paint
I thought I heard a sound outside
At the edge of my perception
I could not make it out clearly
Nor tell from which direction
But then I heard it once again
There was no mistaking this
This sound had no clear word for it
But was a sound I couldn’t dismiss
Its droning became incessant
It was time to take a look
I opened up the outside door
Immediately, my body shook
I shook quite uncontrollably
And soon my limbs felt numb
I tried to turn to go inside...
Hey…where did they come from!
A blazing light turned night to day
Something hit me like a bolt
A beam, plumb unescapable
Delivered quite a jolt
Somehow, I heard them say “relax”
And found I shook no more
As they approached…more like a zoom
I dreaded what was in store
Thankfully, I still had faculties
Muscle movement, I seemed to lack
That’s when my eyes closed
All went black
Next I knew, I was on my back
I saw movement all about
They appeared in a blue haze
Didn’t know if I’d been here for minutes
Or whether it had been days
I detected an aroma
And then another wafted by
Each being seemed to emit a scent
One even smelled like pumpkin pie
With the thought I should voice my protest
They all turned and peered at me
“We’re ready to communicate.”
Wait…were they...talking...to me?
“Clearly, you would like to speak.
We, too, have things to say.
You do not need to speak in words;
We don’t hear or speak that way!”
It took a while to digest that
They waited patiently
I’m sure they heard the maelstrom
In my head, loquaciously
"We've come to take the red fluid
That circulates in you
It's protectant from our glowing orb
And gives shelters a crimson hue."
The previous words I thought to say
Flew posthaste from my head
I'm sure if they proceed with this
That means I end up dead
"Oh yes, human, that is the case!
We think you'll do just fine.
You've lots of rich, red fluid
which we'll drain out down the spine!"
I had to speak up quickly
They picked me? I wondered why!
But I found myself flipped on my belly
They said, "It's time to die."
I said, "Oh no, you can't do this
My blood just will not do
Why don't you let me up from here
I've other options for you."
"Oh no, human, we planted you! There's no other option.
We grew you here for this purpose
Then allowed your adoption."
This news was more than I could stand
So stunned, I could voice no objection
As my mind raced, chaotically
They began the fatal injection
