the devils have summer
such heat
plagues my skin and
the bottoms of my feet,
children run in sprinklers
atop healthy green lawns,
tire rubber melts upon the street.

mirages of flames
over every walking head
that may look around to blame,
the shade grows weak with
what it must provide,
the sun puts our strength to shame.

intense thirst
ravages our well-being
but others say they’ve felt the worst,
surely these devils love humidity
with its savage moisture,
their tropical speech is well rehearsed.

then summer ends
with its last bit of vengeful
effort in rays of harm it sends,
we bid farewell to its hellish
issues and obsessive attention seeking,
until we welcome fall back as our friend.
