Unsaid Goodbye
The good old man sat on the chair,
watching the children play.
He smiled as they ran, tumbled and
laughed, carefree and happy.
He remembered a time when he was
like that, when the world was
full of prospects and possibilities and
nothing could go wrong.

But that was a very long time ago. Now,
he was senile, tired and old,
and the world seemed to be a much
gloomy place. He had seen too
much pain and misery, and he had lost
too many people he loved.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He tried to remember
the good old days, but it was hard.
The bad memories and terrible moments always seemed
to be pretty stronger.

He opened his eyes and looked at the children again. They were still playing,
nescient to the troubles of the world.
He wished he could be like them,
but he knew that time has
passed him by.

He stood up and laggardly walked away.
He didn't say goodbye to the children,
because he knew that it would
be a lie.
He would never see them again.
