Run
You start off feeling great,
I can do this, it's easy!
Footfalls in a steady rhythm,
like running comes naturally.
Soon the breathing picks up,
starts to get a little harder.
But I'm on a roll, and I can go,
ever so much further.
I look around as I make my way,
seeing all there is to see.
Smile at those I pass as I go,
enjoying feeling free.
Don't know how far it'll be today,
will I make my usual miles?
Can I maybe add more time in,
See how long I keep the smiles.
I can feel my legs working,
my lungs pulling in the air.
Sweat beads fall down my face,
and dampen my curly hair.
There's no room for thinking,
of tasks or fights I've had.
It's just me and my body,
Along this beaten path.
All the pent up energy is leaving,
shifting anxiety and stress.
I can turn around anytime I want,
Knowing that I'll feel less.
Less of the anger, less of the hurt,
ready to take it all back on.
Knowing I don't need to win or lose,
I triumph when I run.
I hear my heartbeat in my chest,
my feet carry me along.
I hear my breathing labouring,
as my being sings the running song.
The rhythm of the footfalls,
the rush of air in and out.
I smile wide as I realise,
my personal best in within shout.
A little more and then I'll get,
myself back to my place.
I'm dripping with sweat but that's ok,
even when it pours down my face.
I turn the corner to my front door,
and tell my fitbit I'm done.
Take off my shoes, I feel replete,
looking forward to my next run.
