“The Sidewalk”

God worked on my heart
In such a way
For a homeless man sitting
On the sidewalk today
Small talk exchanged about the weather
I said “Have a good day, stay dry”
He said “Thank you much, you too”
As I continued to walk by
I rounded the corner
When God spoke to me
“Give that man your last two dollars”
“He needs it more than you believe!”
I took two more steps
I started not to listen but
I went back, handed him the money
And his eyes lit up and glistened
He said “ OHHHHHH THANK YOU so much”
“In this world, hardly anybody cares anymore”
I said “You’re welcome that God told me to”
And besides, I have everything I needed from the store”
He said “A lot of people just don’t have
A good big heart like you do”
He said “Thank you for your time”
“And thank you for being you”
Before I walked away
He shook my hand and nodded his head
And that was the last thing to me
That homeless man had said
I know God worked on my heart
In such a way
For that homeless man sitting
On that sidewalk today
