Healthy in my golden years
depends on your definition
If arthritic joints move
and cancer’s in remission
Include my mental state
refill the medication for depression,
Take an over the counter gummy
for the muffin top and belly,
my medicare plan doesn’t cover
any workout sessions
My social security comes once a month
when I worked, got paid every week
the budget doesn’t stretch
when you need new brakes and tires
and the washer starts to leak
I need a handrail in the shower
but can’t install it myself
and handymen get paid by the hour
The drug plan won’t cover
my blood pressure pills anymore
the letter said they’re not on the list
but if I have a stroke
and they have to pay
they’re going to be pissed
My long term health insurance company
is being sued for fraud
The neighborhood assisted living facility
filed for bankruptcy
The HOA is raising our rates
and applying a special assessment
for paving streets and parking spaces
I tried to listen to Ben Franklin’s wisdom
“early to bed and early to rise”
but I worked in healthcare
so it couldn’t apply to me
I’ve decided to prepay my cremation
while it’s still somewhat affordable
My spiritual health plan
is the only one that is in good condition
Making me see that all this effort doesn’t pay,
my bills will stop and so will the pain
I’ll have nothing else to worry over
and only memories of me will remain
So I’m going to find happiness
as best as I can and for as long
That’s my healthy lifestyle plan
I don’t have to pay for
