Searching notes made in fright
Exploring new lands so dark and yet so bright.

Through the pages of the hardcover book
Our adventures lay off the hook.

Lands conquered and kingdoms swept
In war and famine and deep despair.

A decree, a law, so harsh
Made by a tyrant king, tore empires apart.

Struck with doubt and fear
Distant peering eyes and echoing jeers.

I read with intrigue and jitters
“Is this story sweet or bitter?”

As I read through the end of the beginning
I figured out that nobody was winning.

I flip to see if it has a happily ever after
But guess what?
All that ended in laughter!
