Screams
A river flowed eastwards.
By the bank it stood
screaming of joy
screaming of sorrow
no one heard
no one cared.

It wanted to go
with the flow
towards the east
where everything's the best.

But, it screamed and rowed,
on a paper boat
towards the west
arms outstretched
shouting for help
'cause it lost its way.

It screamed and rowed,
wanting to jump
with laughter, with burns
but jumping would drown it
or so it feared.

It screamed and rowed,
without destination
the way seemed too long
too hard
too painful.

Blood trickled down the oars
colouring the river red
then came the smoke
inside its head.

The last it saw
was an angel, all blurred
wings torn apart,
a black robed dread.

The face, oh, the face!
the face of the one dream
the one it remembered
so well, so clear
the one that brought peace
the one that brought ease.

"If you ask me", it screamed
"to name the things
I yearned for
so long, so bad
but yet never got,
I would say your name
over and over again."

It screamed and rowed,
screaming of joy
screaming of sorrow
fingers pulling the hair
nails picking the flesh
blood all over
drenched in tears.

It closed its eyes
and let itself float
to the forbidden place
unseen, unheard, unsure.

But, dreams turned nightmares
haunted it, there and forever.
Screams, screams everywhere
Screams of joy
Screams of sorrow.
