PRICE OF LIFE

Born of need and driven by desire
Unthinking in pursuit of satisfaction
Hunger brings its own pain before growth
And energy of motion, drawn from a kill —
The meal of life in a race on a scale short of time
Warm blood and the taste of death,
Ripped in the carnal flesh that drives breath

Bright are the eyes ahead of a primal mind
Tight are the tendons in a hunter of life
Purpose and poise out on the plains
High upon frozen slopes
Draped in furs, unshaven and wild
Thirst and hunger are the reason
Spear and shaft, the cutting of days

Running before the wind,
Held in a dead father’s dream,
What are we today when we look away
From a nature that calls us on under
The lightening and the raging storm?
Like a panther man was born, never an angel
Formed out of circumstance that seem to be lost

Opening the door on who we are
Out came a wolf that was hidden within
Look into my eyes —
There are words howling at the moon
Two-legged, but quadrupedal in my mind
The scent of the kill today as it was before
The quickening before a strike

It is eat or lose life’s will
Only then can you know what it’s to be alive
It is for millennia the way we survived
Speed and the hunt, intense with fear
Can you feel it? It is ever so near
The price of life was once painted in blue
Upon the cave wall of my mind.
