At first glance, it seems harmless
Pandora's box sitting on my desk
In the form of a white envelope
The name and address are mine
But signed under an all too familiar one

Another peace offering
I recognize the handwriting
The smell of the writer still lingers
Taunting me
I'm not sure why I've kept it
When I can already imagine its content

Lies, deceit and mockery
Confessions and apologies
Pointing fingers and accusations
Another mind game
To try and win me back
In a relationship that never was

And likely a few photographs
Meant to stir up the nostalgia
Of better days
When I was still too naive
To comprehend
The dysfunction of it all

If I read the letter now
I'll be giving away my power
And the freedom I fought so hard for
I hold the letter
And throw it
