cannons roar-
oh wait-
no,
that's just the neighbors celebrating
(early)
setting fires and letting smoke join
with the clouds that roll on in,
and let it pour.
then the flashes,
and the bangs and
claps and crashes
no longer come from parties
but echo from the sky
and the patriots go inside
and fall asleep
to the sound of nature's perfect freedom billowing through
the now still summer night
