Help me find a book!!
I have been desperately trying to locate the title of a book I read a couple years ago.
It was about a girl who trained either falcons or hawks.
This took place in the 1800s, I think in England.
I remember she lived in a kind of castle house with her parents and servants, with a separate tower for housing hawks/falcons, and it was all crumbling somewhat.
Her father was a tamer as well, and they used to breed the birds but now they're too poor and only have 4 or 5 birds.
I believe their family line used to be very wealthy.
I think a few years prior a terrible storm hit and caved parts of their castle, and killed some birds. Maybe through a fire.
She gave off a female Robin Hood aesthetic, and I think she could use a bow as well.
She had 3 friends, two boys, one girl I think, and they had treehouse lookouts all around the forest.
They find some sort of ruby box or ring, and individually keep seeing dark figures by their treehouses, or following them.
They have some sort of mission, but the main character gets separated and somehow ends up deathly ill in a homeless center at a church.
One of the nurses/sisters knows who she is, and is working with the shadowy figures they saw previously.
She starves the girl, and keeps her sick.
At one point the girl, who knows about the evil nurse, but is so weak she can't do anything, is either propped against a window or lying in the courtyard, and she sees her family's oldest falcon/hawk.
She reaches out her hand, and thinks she took her dying breath.
Then she realizes she shapeshifted into the bird.
She flies to the Queen, and the Queen knows she is a shapeshifter, though the girl can't talk in bird form.
The Queen gives her some item, and she flies home to save her home, family, and friends, and stop whatever plot the shadow men had planned.
That's all I remember.
Does anyone know what this is titled??
If you've made it this far, thank you for reading, and hopefully you know what I'm looking for.
I'll update if my repeated Google searches find anything.
Thanks!
