A Lie
The smile on my face is real,
It bears witness to how I feel.
A lie that I keep repeating,
Beautiful enough, but unyielding.
The mask on my face is real,
It is how the world sees me, no denial.
The faces around, I wonder,
Do they hide their true selves under?
The world is full of masks, it's true,
But the one we wear is up to me and you.
A mask can hide the pain we feel,
But it can also conceal what's real.
A facade that we put on display,
To keep our true selves at bay.
A shield that we use to protect,
But it can also make us deflect.
A lie that we tell ourselves each day,
To keep the truth from getting in the way.
A game that we play with the world,
But it can also leave us unfurled.
A friend that we keep by our side,
But it can also be our demise.
Days keep moving, time keeps flying,
That one beautiful lie, I still keep repeating.
