I Preach the Midnight Gospel

By light of day
do I come forth,
heading South now,
into darkness.
The flame I bear,
come from the North,
to light the pyre,
to burn the carcass.
From under the biers,
scurry the vermin.
thus began the midnight sermon.
In the beginning
was the dream,
in which we heard,
Creator's word.
Spoke of flapping
rainbow wings,
upon a flying serpent bird.
Thoughts consumed,
with wanting more,
it earned the name, Excelsior.
It soared the heights,
with reckless delight,
rainbow fading from our sight,
with the Sun
so close,
so blinding,
so bright.
His plumage molting
and colors bleached,
to the Creator
he then beseeched.
"Approacheth not, Excelsior,
thou I do impeach,
I cast you down
among hearts of darkness,
so your colors can be leached."
Excelsior was humbled,
by darkened hearts
that were there to teach.
When given the privilege
to return, he prepared for us a speech.
Spoke directly to light-born hearts,
that he found within us, each.
Prophesied of the day to come,
when we are lost within the deep.
Told us how
dark are the depths
that our depravity will reach.
Thus give we now homage,
to the serpent bird
as he sleeps.
Imparting to us color divine,
to thy dreaming eye,
so our waking eyes could weep,
at the pitch of darkness
surrounding us,
in this midnight as I preach
