i grew up into a twisted thicket of thorns
a seedling grown in a nutrient starved home
where the soil was smokey charred
dead under my suffocating stem
cause mum and dads roots were under watered too
they could only see us as rotten fruit
and in their shadow
the little sunflower in me
couldn’t flower
til she was planted in a safer place
now she can shine
