And So We Dance
In our early youth
When the thunder sounded
And lightning flashed
Grandmother whispered to us--
And when the rain falls,
We dance.
So here we stand
Our youth sourly spent
Arms outstretched
Eyes closed to the skies
Rain drenching our skin
And for a moment--
We are free.
Streams of memory
Flowing down our limbs
Aches of body
And aches of mind
Washing down to the earth--
Pooling at our bare feet.
Within our storms
We hear her voice
Carried by the wind
Echoed by the patter
On the old tin roof--
And when the rain falls,
We dance.
And so we dance.
