Mouse in a Cage
Mouse in a cage
That is what I feel like
Even though I freed myself
From that cage two years ago
Looking at this picture
This house that was never a home
Can’t click the full screen
Afraid for the image to be all I can see
Zoom in
Closer
Closer
Is that?
A ghost in the window
Two beaming eyes staring back at me
Glaring at me
Furious
Why did you leave?
Do you think you can leave?
Do you really think you can escape that easily?
You’ll never make it
You’ll never survive without me
Not because you can’t survive without me
But because I taught you to believe
That you needed me
When in truth it was I who needed you
A broken, poorly assembled skeleton
of a human hurt by the world
born into hurt
Breathing in pain
Until it seeped and fused
With my DNA
It was all I knew
And I bestowed that pain to you
Passing down to my daughter
A crown of thorns
Taught her to wear the crown
And show no pain even as the blood
drips over my brow
You piled your baggage
Into a child’s arms
Whipped grown woman scars
Into the plush silk skin of a child
Dear Mother
I love you
and I will never return to you
I can’t run back into your arms
Because you can’t see
That you are still wearing your
Barbed wired armor
Your love
Is abuse
But you are colorblind
And no matter how hard I try
I can’t get you to see
Your own true colors
But what you need...
That is what I feel like
Even though I freed myself
From that cage two years ago
