Wet Socks
There is not one single thing
on this sodden Earth
that irks me more so
than to be cursed to wear
a pair of cold and wet socks.

To tread in a lurking saturated patch,
hidden slapdash on the floor of the kitchen.
Burdened up to the ankles,
sinking into a ditch incredulously.
To take those less than fair-weathered walks
amongst waterlogged flora,
the world all awash in a slippery, glistening aura
then splosh—
an erroneous step
into a puddle with a shoe ill-equipped
for such frivolous occasions as this.

Now a sole may be dampened,
the mood slightly too,
but never the spirit.
For a soul can take any moment and steer it
toward a more exuberant, transformative view.

So how grateful I am to then wear
some clean and dry socks at all
in this over-soaked realm.
A dilemma, trivial—
to have the rare chance of sullying them.
