comfort
it's interesting -
the things we unlearn
and have to reteach ourselves
as adults.
a friend said something in passing
a few weeks ago,
and it hasn't left my mind since:
"I don't wear
uncomfortable clothes to work."
this statement blew my mind.
my mother is many things.
she's done many things.
she's a very accomplished professional.
i grew up
accustomed to people
wondering aloud at my mother's
achievements and acclaim.
my mother taught me many rules
for dressing, behaving, and interacting.
my sister and i soaked up the lessons
like sponges.
comfort has never been a consideration.
i've always been complimented
on my style and attire -
professionally and at formal events.
i was taught that style
and professionalism
outweighed other needs.
comfort was never a consideration.
i am also complimented
on my behaviour and communication
in professional situations.
even when my world is crumbling,
i learned to shove it down
and prioritise and respond to
the needs of the other...
the things we unlearn
and have to reteach ourselves
as adults.
