Rahul Gandhi Appointed as Leader of Opposition in 18th Lok Sabha: What This Means for Indian Politics.
Rahul Gandhi, who led the Lok Sabha election campaign with the Indian Constitution in hand, was elected Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the House of the People on Monday. As LoP, he will receive a salary and various facilities under the Salary and Allowances of Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Act, 1977.

Gandhi, a five-time Lok Sabha MP representing Amethi, Wayanad, and Raebareli, first became an MP in 2004.

Despite a brief disqualification in 2023 due to a defamation case, his membership was reinstated. He served as Congress President from 2017 to 2019 and currently chairs the Youth Congress.

As LoP, Gandhi will have the status, salary, and allowances of a Cabinet minister, including a salary of Rs 3.3 lakh and Z+ security cover. He will also sit on panels selecting the chief election commissioner, election commissioners, and heads of central agencies like the CBI, ED, and CVC. His role will bolster the Opposition, particularly in checks on government use of investigative agencies.

This time it will not give the opposition the chance to state that central agencies are being misused against them.
