The Pearl
The plain looking oyster
Cracked wide open
Day and night
She had been working
Beginning with
A tiny grain of sand
One day, she is forced open
A beautiful pearl
Gifted for me

How sad that the beauty
Created from such time and labor
Would be taken from the oyster
Taken from the sea
Did she know all along
What her destiny would be
No choice I bet was given
In how her time was spent
Did she claim the pearl
As her own
As her own child she made

Maverick was my pearl
Plucked right from my life
He was mine
He was my child
A dog, yes
But no less a child
Someday I'll hold my pearl
Kiss his sweet face and head
For now, I've learned
What it's like to have loved and lost
Like an oyster and her pearl
