At Starbucks
We see each other most every day,
At Starbucks getting a daily latte.
We acknowledge each other with a smile,
After you order you linger a while.

I have tried to find a way to break through,
To work up the courage to talk to you.
I've learned your name, it's written on the cup,
It's announced when you need to pick it up.

Just making a small talk feels overwhelming,
I try but then my brain starts rebelling.
I get so anxious when trying to speak.
Seeing you most days adds to the mystique.

Maybe get a hot chocolate we're already here,
Or go somewhere to talk and have a beer.
It seems simple but what if you say no,
Our routine would change, I’d have to lay low.

This has gone on so long it now feels weird,
I’ve gone through each scenario I’ve feared,
Rejection is the biggest barrier,
I don’t agree that it builds character.

I walked in today, but you were with someone else,
Certainly he wasn’t just anyone my heart tells.
Laughing with your hand in his, your favourite coffee you both ordered,
I cried shedding tears but smiled on your way, hiding my heart tortured.
