society
How has our world shaped you
Do you walk atop the corpses of those who came before you
Or do you dig their graves, kneel at their feet and praise them for what they accomplished
How do you present yourself, holding your head high
do you plant it in the ground or hide it in the clouds
Are your thoughts free, or did you steal them from your past
Do you see the strings dancing among the crowds
Our great puppeteer, steering our ways
We praise him, we follow him, willingly attaching his strings to our backs
And we're surprised when he discards us after one false move
He hates our mistakes
Holds us against ourselves
And he isn't as anonymous as someone without a name
For he is called society.
He chants his mantras, telling us we're free
Telling us, be unique, be different
But he's just as ready to tell us that you're too different, and too unique.
We listen as he demonstrates how to saw off your imagination
How to surgically removed your quirks
He's cold and calculating like the perfect doctor
He doesn't tell us we'll never get them back
No
Our great orchestrator, the one who tells our parents what to tell us is right
What's wrong
Oh society, a child of our own humanity
Grew wings and like a phantom
Showed us where to put our feet
Showed us where to plant our hands
Showed how to climb that ladder
But never told us about the door right next to it
Never told us we could turn around and walk away
Never told us that the ladder never ends
