Tell me why
A thought occurred to me the other day.
Why are we not all treated the same way?
How can we live in a world with so much hatred?
The kind that spreads and eats though things like acid.
Why is being different considered an insult?
How is the task of being kind so difficult?
Being black is not something that should hurt.
Why is being gay something you should convert?
When was it decided that all mental illness should be hidden?
That being different is somehow forbidden.
I'm ashamed and embarrassed to be white.
Because I fully accept that I'm not always right.
I'm almost as ashamed as I am to be American.
Like my nationality to others in now a burden.
But why does it have to be this way?
Why is it deemed that these actions are okay?
I know my actions alone won't change a whole lot.
But right now that's all I've got.
