Ladders
When we are born
We are handed a ladder
Entwined with the bark
Of our parents' desires
Our nation's ideals
And the morals, fads
Thought of our time
Endlessly climbing
Away from the fires of
Judgement, ostracism,
Shame, and fear
We slumber
Towards a step
That was never
Our own
Step off
And unfold
The ladder
Inside
'Be a light to yourself'
