He was buried and laid to rest today
With long lines of cars in the cemetery
He will rest in peace now and no longer feel the pain
From all the scars that took his life so early

Colorful flowers and wreaths on each side
Where his oak casket lay
as they lowered him down to the ground
She cries as her heart mourns his loss today

Family and friends come to her
Her eyes were swollen from crying with grief
Saying to her "How sorry they are
Then they slowly walk away and leave

His mother was not there for the funeral, she was in the hospital
She fainted away because it was too much for her brain
she just couldn't bear the fact
she was not going to see her only son again

His young happy life was taken away
Taken away at such a very young age
A careless driver on her smartphone
Checking the status on her Facebook page

It all happened just last week
She was in her home clothes
In the kitchen making dinner
Grill chicken and Mash potatoes

When she ran out of tomato ketchup
So he walked to the deli to buy the ketchup and ate an ice cream cone
Then while crossing the Street
he was hit by a girl distracted by her phone

And when he did not return home
She just knew that something was wrong
When she got the call from the police
she just fell crying to the ground

Her father told her after the funeral
To come for a while back home to Trinidad
But right now she’s so confused
She lost the only love she ever had

he was her whole world
he was the love of her life
and she remembers the day
he proposes and asks her to be his wife

And not he's no longer here
To tell her everything will be alright
To dry her tears and hug her
To comfort her in the middle of the night

she knows he would want her to be strong
And learn to be a survivor
Now that all of her life was taken
By the habits of a careless driver

She doesn't know now what she will do
She doesn't know if she feels anger or rage
All because of a careless driver

A message to all the careless drivers
Who is driving while on the phone?
Stop now before you’re responsible
For someone not reaching back home
