There were times when the word 'Hello',
Brought smiles and warmth to a heart.
Yet in these days of direct messaging,
A sinking feeling, in can start.

'Hello', followed by, 'How are you doing?'
Is a greeting I've come to fear.
It saddens me as many times
The intention is so clear.

They want to get to know me,
But not to take the time,
Too soon it's, can we Google Chat
Or Whatsapp, Skype, I find.

They're all many years my junior
They say that they don't mind,
That age is just a number
And I seem so very kind.

I've met so many 'Soldiers'
In the far East based, they say.
All left with their young children
A widowers tale to convey.

Any wonder trust has crumbled
And a loner I've become
Because that Hello greeting
Is now one that leaves me numb.
