Hunger that Shook our Roof
T'was one o'clock in the day
When Mother came into the living room
From her bedroom where she'd been fast asleep,
"Hasn't Daddy come back yet?"
She enquired, with a tickle in her voice,
We just looked,
Just stared,
Glared at her.

She stood at the doorsil
And looked at us,
Sarcastically,
And then,
Scientifically,
As though we were some wearied parasites.

Our mouths were dry,
Our lips cracked painfully when we talked,
Our eyes were so watery
That tears gushed out
In big balls,
Our bellies were bent in awe,
A teaser would ask with a bit of wry,
"Fasting for the whole year?"

I stood up slowly
And plodded over to Mother,
Hugged her,
Kissed her on the cheeks,
And despite being gaunt,
Said:
"Don't worry, mama; Daddy gonna be back soon."
Then I toddled back to the sofa
And drifted into slumber.
