WHEN I HEAR MY MAMA SING
Shouting voices woke me in the middle of the night,
then a strangled cry was heard from the other room.
Fear crept into my whole being
Makes me hope this is all just a nightmare
Dear God, I want to hear my mama sing
Footsteps echoed, a sound of someone leaving
I tiptoed outside and sad eyes looked up to where I stood
Blackness surrounds it from my father’s fist
And I prayed again with all my might
Please, let me hear my mama sing
Futile wish that this is anything but reality
that my mama would wake me up,
then cradle me in her arms.
Everything would be alright
When I hear my mama sing
She sings when she’s happy
That does not happen very often
That night, I cradled her into my arms
and I sang to her with all my heart
