Broken Crown (A letter to my mother)
Sometimes when I go about my day,
And I find myself smiling,
And saying something ridiculous
Or witty and clever,
I catch myself reflecting..
Feeling taken aback,
From the realization
That there are fragments of you
That linger
Within me.
Sometimes the words I speak
And the humor I share
Carry traces of your essence.
I should be proud,
I should wear these bits and pieces of you
Like a crown
But it makes me feel burdened....
And I find myself smiling,
And saying something ridiculous
Or witty and clever,
I catch myself reflecting..
Feeling taken aback,
From the realization
That there are fragments of you
That linger
Within me.
Sometimes the words I speak
And the humor I share
Carry traces of your essence.
I should be proud,
I should wear these bits and pieces of you
Like a crown
But it makes me feel burdened....
