A School Of Blackbirds
I didnt think I would find the landscape here
beautiful,
but I do.
The farmland that rolls softly beside me
as I drive down this country road,
folds loneliness up in its hills and carries it far into the distance.
In late afternoon during the first weeks of fall,
the Sun likes to spread himself over the green and gold patchwork horizon.
Casting the hay shimmering, and keeping the cattle relaxed in his hypnotic and warm golden sparkle.
I drive with the windows down.
As I barel down the road from the cloud of dust behind me,
before me hundreds of tiny blackbirds
are darting left and right at the last available moment.
They are quick and organized,
exactly like a school of fish.
Watching them in amazement,
I imagine I am cruising on a highway at the bottom of the sea.
