At the last moment of hope
To save what once was
A hidden hand grabs at my throat
Had I shouted every unspoken word
Would you have listened?
Would it have even sunk in?
A master at blocking out any story
That doesn’t match what you’ve built
You’ve convinced yourself that I’m to blame
By numbing any sense of guilt
As I reflect on what’s to happen next
I reach inside to feel my heartbeat
But all I find is emptiness
And any inch of hope
That the universe permits
Leads to another shot of dope
And a trail of remiss
There I stand with my back to the sun
And walk with my shadow
Whom I can no longer outrun
Familiar patterns of the past
Forever seek to make the pain last
Love left to be my alibi for feeling hurt
To justify this life I deserve
For, in the end, it’s clear to see
That my real enemy was me.
