Treadmill in the Basement
A treadmill in the basement
Running but never arriving
Hardly seeing one foot ahead
Hardly a point to surviving
Out of the frozen shadows
Something lies upstairs
A start, an end, a mystery,
A secret no one shares
8 billion chilly gazes
Yet in darkness all alone
An urge to stop treading
To set foot upon the stone
To cross the dingy basement
Find what lies behind that door
Most find fear in the unknown
But I fear the basement more
