The view from the other side
The greying sheets of snow, slumped across the steep edge of the Himalayas, broke away, as if recoiling from the soft crimson light of the winter sun, and beyond lay the haven.
A deep valley, scooped from the frozen earth as if by a playful giant, spilling over with waves of lush pine forest, so close I could taste the tang of sap and pine cones. A serpent of rippling blue twisted its way through the center, coiling into a crystal lagoon which danced and sparkled, reaching out to flocks of fluttering songbirds which dipped and soared, skimming the waves, settling in clusters on spindly pine trees before rising again in an endless dance, their songs floating on the cool breeze. A silky twist of smoke rose sleepily from a lone log cabin nestled between trees, windows glowing softly, freckling the frosted ground with a golden light like honey.
There was movement outside- a figure emerged from behind crusted wooden walls. Not a man, but a deer, his huge dark shape melting from the trees like a phantom. A twisted bone crown swept gracefully over his copper head, draped with glittering crystals of ice. Even from such a distance, I could feel his gaze meet mine, see his bright amber eyes regarding me with regal intensity. I shivered. He turned, and swept back into the forest.
