The old lady at the store
The old lady at the store.

She reached up high for the shelves,
her little arms extending up,
and her little, bony fingers curling around the box of candy.

I watched, frozen, as the candy fell to the ground with a crash.
I instantly rushed over to help her,
picking up the candy and collecting it in my arms.

She thanked me and called me honey,
I smiled at her and said no worries.

I walked off, but it was like a brick wall suddenly hit me.
I felt pain flood through me,
my grief was overflowing.

I saw you, Popou,
when you fell.

The crashing and the desperation I felt.
I was in the car, seatbelt on, as we waited for you.
I remember seeing you fall.
A scream was the only noise I could make.
I was so scared.
So
scared.

You were fine.
But crashing sounds still terrify me.
And I don't think I will ever not tremble from them.
