Hats
#WritcoPoemPrompt107

People
being themselves
their hats lost control
swallowing heads
yet again
slinging
a fortunate shot
that landed in my brain
they got
the lucky foot
I got the rabbit's luck

Splattered
grey and white matter
on my face
smoke filled my eyes
like hot tear gas
white light blinding
tears went tumbling
in red, then black
they tasted sour like bile
slimy at the back
of my throat

I can hear police horns
a delusion?
someone shouting
did they care?
one or two lost
in something something
million?
what is the difference
of someone dead
and cannibal hats
on empty skulls?

So much heads
dangling like key fobs
with shiny bobby pins
so much madness
ebb and flow
like lead in our veins
so much hats and hatred
eating us up
many wasting away
voices carried
in the wind

We never switch hats
it's not in our books
if that's the safe for brains
then it failed
to save any of us
but why
did you look at me like that
like you were sad?
what were you saying?
I couldn't hear you
must be my hat

As if possessed
you shook me
in a heartbeat
we switched hats
