Jumping In
Take a dive into the leaves;
scatter crinkled bits of gold and green.
Listen to the squirrels chatter and
the faint whisper of the breeze.
With narrowed gaze,
peer a spying eye to see
a robin's nest above.
Bundle up before the night
in knitted scarf and glove,
for with the cold of Autumn's kind
come: hooting owls and starry nights,
icy brooks, scurrying hares,
scampering mice and sleeping bears.
Then, when adventuring subsides,
when all that's left are
tired eyes, moon lit skies, and fire flies
hunker down in patterned quilt and feathered bed, Mama's story telling
to sleepy heads, and
close your eyes, knowing today was good.
For another day is coming as it should,
and again, you'll discover life because you're free.
And you'll take a dive into the leaves.
