THE WORLD LIGHTS NO CANDLE
While a candle
sits in the dark,
it must set some fire
on its own wick,
and shine
till the world sees its light
and gives it a place
in the midst
of the brightest of candles
where its light
can be of greater use.

Without lighting their flame,
the best of candles
go down the belly of the grave,
failing to stand in the midst
of the brightest of candles
where their light
ought to have been
of greater use.

The world gives no place
to a candle without flame.
She lights no wick;
and cares not
how bright you can shine,
till she has seen the light
you have put on your wick.
