The Slick of Summer
The slick of summer was all it took
to realise we were far too busy
looking down over ripened fruit
to notice the fair warning—

the orchard leaves adorning
a season of complacencies,
where urgencies in oranges
crept out from mellow greens.

To not have seen the signs, profuse;
the writings on the wall.
Drunk on July’s fermented juice,
the softened light of early fall.

And so the Sun, low-hanging,
pressed beneath the foot of God,
exudes its nectar, lingers
over hallowed hills, untrod.
